Multiple Shock Fronts in RBS 797: The Chandra Window on Shock Heating in Galaxy Clusters

چکیده

Using $\sim$427 ks of Chandra observations, we present a study shock heating and ICM cooling in the galaxy cluster RBS 797. We discover three nested pairs weak shocks at roughly 50 kpc, 80 kpc 130 from center. The total energy associated with is $\sim6\times10^{61}$ erg, central AGN driving pair every 20-30 Myr power $P_{sh}\approx10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Based on its morphology age ($\sim$30 Myr), inner cocoon four equidistant X-ray cavities previously discovered. From thermodynamic analysis 30 find evidence for condensation into colder gas between behind cavities. mechanical (cavities shocks) $3.4\times10^{46}$ s$^{-1}$ can balance radiative losses, estimated as $L_{cool} = 2.3\times10^{45}$ By building plots $P_{cav}$ vs. $L_{cool}$, $P_{shock}$ $L_{cool}$ $P_{tot}$ 797 14 other clusters, groups elliptical galaxies where both are detected, verify that most powerful outbursts found strongest systems. Ultimately, observe exceeds losses by factor different FR I II radio galaxies, being less than few tens Is (as 797) more hundred IIs.

Shock heating by FR I radio sources in galaxy clusters

Feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGN) is frequently invoked to explain the cut-off of the galaxy luminosity function at the bright end and the absence of cooling flows in galaxy clusters. Meanwhile, there are recent observations of shock fronts around radioloud AGN. Using realistic 3D simulations of jets in a galaxy cluster, we address the question what fraction of the energy of active galac...

Simulation of Shock Fronts

We describe a Continuous Hugoniot Method for the efficient simulation of shock wave fronts. This approach achieves a significantly improved efficiency in the generation of individual steady-state shock front states, and allows for the study of shocks as a function of a continuous shock strength parameter, vp. This is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to map the Hugoniot continuously. We appl...

Intermediate shocks in three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic bow-shock flows with multiple interacting shock fronts

Simulation results of three-dimensional (3D) stationary magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) bow-shock flows around perfectly conducting spheres are presented. For strong upstream magnetic field a new complex bow-shock flow topology arises consisting of two consecutive interacting shock fronts. It is shown that the leading shock front contains a segment of intermediate 1-3 shock type. This is the first co...

Shocks and Cold Fronts in Galaxy Clusters

The currently operating X-ray imaging observatories provide us with an exquisitely detailed view of the Megaparsec-scale plasma atmospheres in nearby galaxy clusters. At z < 0.05, the Chandra’s 1 angular resolution corresponds to linear resolution of less than a kiloparsec, which is smaller than some interesting linear scales in the intracluster plasma. This enables us to study the previously u...

On the Origin of Bimodality in Galaxy Properties: Cold Flows vs. Shock Heating, Clustering and Feedback

We address the origin of the robust bi-modality observed in galaxy properties about a characteristic stellar mass ∼3× 1010M⊙. Less massive galaxies tend to be ungrouped blue star-forming discs, with properties correlated along a “fundamental line”. More massive galaxies are typically grouped red old-star spheroids on a “fundamental plane” and hosting AGNs. M/L is at a minimum near the critical ...
